English Language Arts Coaching
Maria currently works with English Language Arts teachers and coaches across a range of grade levels from K to 12. She has a deep understanding of the Common Core standards for English Language Arts and Literacy. Maria has a strong background in the science of teaching reading. This work includes teaching phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, spelling, handwriting, and comprehension, all using evidence-based practices. She also leads sessions and coaches work in the Writer's Workshop model of instruction. She specializes in either writing units of study or supporting teachers in writing their own units to deliver the highest quality English Language Arts instruction. Her coaching work includes the following: supporting the planning of units and lessons for grades K-12 in both reading and writing, leading professional development on both the structures and practices for effective literacy instruction, modeling both reading and writing lessons, side-by-side coaching, supporting teachers in integrating strategies for English language learners, and helping teachers design and implement effective assessment practices. Maria is especially passionate about student choice in both reading and writing and helping teachers develop a strong climate that reflects a community of literacy.
